With Week 15 of the NFL season upon us and the playoffs coming up in just a couple of weeks, I think it’s an absolutely perfect time to take a look at my top three Super Bowl contenders.
#3: Chicago Bears
In Super Bowl 50, the Denver Broncos proved that in today’s NFL, a defense can still win you a championship. Peyton Manning threw for just 141 yards, no TDs, and an interception. However, they were able to pull out the victory because of their very stellar defensive core including Chris Harris, Aqib Talib, Brandon Marshall, Danny Trevathan, and Von Miller leading the charge.
This year’s Chicago Bears’ defense is as good as, if not better, than the 2016 Broncos’ defense. With a young and hungry defense that’s forced a league-leading 25 interceptions, the Chicago Bears could very well be in a good place to make a run at the Super Bowl. The only thing keeping the Bears from being higher on my list is the inconsistent offensive performances. One week the Bears look like one of the best all-around offenses in the NFL. The following week they lose to the Miami Dolphins. If the Bears want to make a real run at the Super Bowl, they need to fix their offensive inconsistencies, however, their defense can (and will) give them an opportunity.
#2: Los Angeles Rams
The Rams have one of the most high-powered offenses in the NFL and one of the most talented defenses in the league, as well. With such talent on their
Their offense ranks third in the NFL overall, which shows just how high-caliber this offense is. Todd Gurley is the second-leading rusher in the NFL and leads the NFL in Rushing TDs. The offense is led by QB Jared Goff who has thrown for nearly 4,000 yards and 27 TDs while tossing just 11 interceptions.
What worries me about this team is that their defense has underperformed immensely this season, ranking in the bottom half of the NFL in overall defense. Considering their talent on the defensive side of the ball and the fact that they have the NFL’s best defensive player in Aaron Donald, this defense should be much better. They’ll have to perform much better in order to beat the top team on this list.
#1: New Orleans Saints
The Saints get the edge over the Bears and Rams for one reason: DREW BREES. Rather than a younger QB like Mitchell Trubisky and Jared Goff leading a high-powered offense, the Saints have Drew Brees, a Super Bowl champ and MVP. He’s thrown for 78,117 yards through the air in his career (including playoffs).
Brees has yet to slow down, and now that he has weapons like Alvin Kamara and Michael Thomas on his side, this offense will be a hard one to stop. That side of the ball can lead the Saints to a Super Bowl championship, especially when Drew Brees is at the helm. I have no worries about this team, barring injuries.
