The NBA shooting guard is one of the most evolving positions over the years. The days of being a star guard without handling the basketball are dwindling. Guys like Devin Booker and Anthony Edwards will lead the top 10 NBA shooting guard rankings for the 2024-2025 season, and for years to come, due to their ability to handle and score the basketball. NBA basketball has become very dynamic and perhaps no position is more dynamic than the shooting guard.
Ranking the top 10 NBA shooting guards took factors into account like their past performance, efficiency, availability, and expected near future production. If your favorite guard isn’t on this top 10 NBA shooting guard for the 2024-2025 season list, chances are they can be found on the top 10 NBA point guards list.
Here are the top 10 NBA shooting guards for the 2024-2025 season
1. Devin Booker – Phoenix Suns
For the weeks leading up to this top 10 NBA shooting guard rankings article, I had Anthony Edwards leading the list. Most of you expected Edwards to lead this list. Team success can contribute to the narrative and rankings of most individuals. Personally, I had to really think through which player I’d rather have if I needed to plug him into most rosters, his history, and production.
I also thought about how many young stars had a great playoff run, and fail to repeat that success in the following seasons. There is no denying the fact that the Suns had a let down season last year. However, if the Suns are going to bounce back, it’s going to be led by Devin Booker. At 27 years of age, he is in his prime.
The Suns offense did not enable Devin Booker to be his best self. Despite all that, he was still remarkable with 27.1 PTS, 4.5 REB, & 6.9 AST on .492 FG% & .364 3P%. Given his usage, his production was on point and efficient. I expect a bounce back season for Devin Booker and the Suns.
2. Anthony Edwards – Minnesota Timberwolves
Most of you expected Edwards to lead our top 10 NBA shooting guards 2024-2025 preseason rankings, for good reason. Anthony Edwards has been a stud. He led the Minnesota Timberwolves to the western conference finals, upsetting the favorites to win the NBA championship in the process.
Edwards benefits from stellar defensive talent around him, and an offense that enables him to be his best self. He is often the primary ball for the Timberwolves and his style of play is flashy and exciting. The scariest part about his game is that he is years away from his prime at just 23 years of age. If he picks up where he left off last season and slightly improved his efficiency, he could quickly rise to the top of our rankings.
Yes Devin Booker is taller than Edwards, but Edwards makes up for it in many ways including his speed, better handling of the basketball, and overall style of play. I’m curious to see if the Timberwolves will take a step back this season, or if they will pick up right where they left off.
3. Jaylen Brown – Boston Celtics
Per Sources faithful know how critical I’ve been of Jaylen Brown over the last few seasons. His decision making and ball handling often infuriates me. However, there is no denying his brilliance as a two-way basketball player. Jaylen Brown often works out with NBA legend Tracy McGrady, and his ability to score the basketball is better for it. When Brown locks in defensively, he is one of the better perimeter defenders in the NBA.
Jaylen Brown is the NBA’s Finals MVP for a reason. Have to give credit where credit is due. I don’t see Brown ever rising on the top 10 shooting guard list, but he could be a top 5 staple for years to come.
4. Donovan Mitchell – Cleveland Cavaliers
Donovan Mitchell is who he has been for the last few seasons, an undersized guard who can really score the basketball. His ability to score the basketball is impressive and undeniable. However, I believe he really needs to elevate his level of play this season or risks dropping on the top 10 shooting guard list. There are so many rising guards in the league. Cleveland is surrounding him with all the talent he needs to win the post season. It’s time to do it.
5. Kyrie Irving – Dallas Mavericks
Kyrie Irving is still one of the NBA’s most gifted players of all time. Despite being one of the best point guards in league history, he has taken a secondary ball handler role over the last few seasons. Irving had somewhat of a comeback season with the Mavericks last season, helping lead them to the NBA Finals.
In a positionless NBA, Irving is a top 5 player at whatever position he chooses to play.
6. Jalen Williams – Oklahoma City Thunder
There are very few on this planet who are bigger Jalen Williams fans than I am. This 23 year old is a stud and arguably the most underrated player in the NBA. Don’t be surprised if he finishes the 2024-2025 season ranked 3 on our top 10 NBA shooting guards.
In just his second season with the Thunder, Williams average 19.1 PTS, 4.0 REB, 4.5 AST, on a very impressive .540 FG% & .427 3P%. With an uptick in scoring, an argument can be made that Jaylen Williams is a better basketball player than Jaylen Brown. Yes, I’m that big of a fan of Jalen Williams.
7. Bradley Beal – Phoenix Suns
There are so many rising shooting guards in the NBA that I genuinely considered taking Beal off the top 10 list. You can almost make the argument that he should be moved to a different position. The Phoenix Suns are one of those confusing positionless teams with no true point guard.
What enabled me to place Beal 7th on the top 10 shooting guard list was his efficiency. He is simply more experienced than most of the rising guards in the league and it shows.
Last season, Beal averaged 18.2 PTs, 4.4 REB, 5.0 AST on .513 FG% & .430 3P%. Very impressive efficiency.
What I don’t like, is 53 games played. Beal hasn’t been healthy in several seasons. Really hoping he finally figures it out.
8. Mikal Bridges – New York Knicks
Mikal Bridges isn’t the most gifted wing player in the league. He’s not the flashiest or most efficient scorer. However, he is arguably one of the most reliable players in league history. Year after year, Bridges is available in abundance for his team. Bridges once again played 82 seasons for the Brooklyn Nets after playing 83 games and 82 games the previous two seasons.
He won’t be tasks with as much of an offensive load with the Knicks. However, he should fit in nicely with a team that wants to play defense, and play hard overall. Can’t think of a more perfect player for the New York Knicks than Mikal Bridges.
9. Desmond Bane – Memphis Grizzlies
At 26 years of age, Desmond Bane is approaching his NBA prime. Despite an upsetting Grizzlies season with the absence of Ja Morant, Bane remains one of the NBA’s most reliable scorers. His presence on the top 10 NBA shooting guard list will rely on him being healthy and producing like we expect him to, in addition to the Grizzlies bouncing back as a unit.
There are many questions surrounding Bane, but I’m optimistic.
10. Devin Vassell – San Antonio Spurs
Devin Vassell is one of the most unknown names in the NBA. At just 23-24 years of age, Devin Vassell averaged 19.5 PTS, 4.1 AST, 3.8 REB, on .472 FG% & .372 3P% in 68 games for the Spurs. Vassell has improved every season in the NBA, despite playing on a team that wasn’t trying to win games.
I expect the Spurs to try to win games this season and I’m optimistic that Vassell will be better for it. Keep an eye on Vassell to emerge as a potential star this season.
Honorable mentions
There are so many great shooting guards I wanted to put on this list like Bogdan Bogdanovic, CJ McCollum, and Tyler Herro. There is also one rising star I really wanted to include in Jalen Green. Production, availability, and efficiency are factored in every ranking. Jalen Green needs to pick up where he left off last season and improve his overall efficiency.
