For those who’ve watch the NFL this season, the New Orleans Saints have been one of the most entertaining teams to watch. Their offense has multiple weapons including WR Michael Thomas, RBs Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram, and franchise-QB Drew Brees. On defense, they have solid pieces in CB Marshon Lattimore, DE Cameron Jordan, and DT Sheldon Rankins. With all this fire-power, it could be tough to miss some of the little things – the guys who do it all.
In New Orleans, that guy is Taysom Hill.
Hill was a semi-successful college QB at BYU, who suffered four season-ending injuries in his college career. Due to those injury concerns, Hill went undrafted in 2017 and was signed by the Green Bay Packers following the Draft. He was cut in the preseason and found a home in New Orleans where he’s been ever since.
These days, in your average Saints’ game, you will see Taysom Hill play every week. However, his jersey number may confuse you when you seem him. Hill plays on the special teams’ units, including being the team’s kick returner in certain situations.
Oh, and sometimes he blocks punts
And in NFC Championship Games he makes TD receptions.
When the Saints traded for Jets QB Teddy Bridgewater during last year’s preseason, we assumed that he’d be the heir to the throne that has belonged to Brees. This season, I think we’ve seen that may not be the case. Bridgewater only played significant time in the last game of the season, completing 14 of 22 attempts for 118 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.
Hill may have only been on the field because of his versatility and to confuse defenses, but he does throw a beautiful ball. This pass, was negated due to a penalty, but it wowed me.
Hill hit Kamara in stride for, what would’ve been, a perfect TD pass. No one will remember it, but that was one of the times I was really impressed by the young QB.
At the time of this post, the Saints have just lost the NFC Championship game due to a bogus missed call. There will be questions about whether or not, Sean Payton should be using Taysom Hill as much as he has. I’ve had that same question. Why take the ball out of a future Hall of Fame QB’s hands? Right now, that question makes sense. In the future, however, we could be talking about the beginning of the Taysom Hill era in New Orleans.
