In the most stunning move of the beginning of the NFL offseason Robert Kraft just let the Colts know his team hasn’t forgotten about deflate-gate. Patriots Offensive Coordinator Josh McDaniels was pencilled in as the next Colts head coach prior to the Super Bowl. McDaniels has since turned down the Colts head coaching job to return to his role in New England.
Kraft Hasn’t Forgotten
Beyond his two post Super Bowl victory speeches pointed at the NFL and Roger Goodell, Robert Kraft just pulled a fast one on Indianapolis. It was reported that in the 48 hours following the loss to the Eagles, Kraft talked with McDaniels and sweetened his contract. This echoes Kraft’s ability that he used when he pulled Bill Belichick away from the Jets before his introductory press conference.
Kraft firmly let Jim Irsay know that deflate-gate may have come and gone, but it’s not forgotten. By ripping the assumed head coach away from a longtime AFC rival, Kraft showed just how vindictive he can be. The move to keep McDaniels also hints at his potential future with the Patriots and a possible promotion when Belichick steps aside.
What This Means for McDaniels
McDaniels is now passing up on what would have been his second head coaching gig. He is remaining in New England as the Patriots’ OC leading Tom Brady, Julian Edelman, Gronk and Brandin Cooks. Kraft allegedly sweetened McDaniels current deal with New England, and may have promised an upcoming promotion.
Last offseason it came out that both Kraft and Belichick had an end date in mind for the head coach’s tenure. Perhaps that end date is much closer than many New England fans may have thought, maybe 2019. With Brady planning to play into his mid 40’s, and his connection with McDaniels, it’s now a safe assumption that McDaniels is next in line for the New England crown. It will be extremely telling in the draft this April what the future holds.
For the Fans
Patriots fans around the world, you may now breathe a slight sigh of relief. In retaining McDaniels there will be continuity into next year. An offense that helped set Super Bowl records (even in a painful loss) will be back together. Will McDaniels be head coach of the Patriots this time next year?
