The 2021-2022 season has seen unprecedent amount of players having to miss time due to health and safety protocols. While this is unfortunate for the players and their respective organizations, many others have benefited from these difficult times. Record setting amounts of 10-day contracts have been offered out this season.
The Dallas Mavericks organization honored Dirk Nowitzki on January 5, 2022, by retiring his jersey and unveiling a statue model they intend to build for Dirk.
Jason Kidd would open the ceremony by offering Dirk Nowitzki a 10-day contract.
The offer was in good gest and made us all laugh. Dirk is a legend of the sport and organization. He deserves to be celebrated. However, even Nowitzki himself knows that his NBA basketball days are far behind him. Dirk Nowitzki in his prime was an unstoppable scorer, but father time is undefeated.
Nowitzki, a 20.7 PTS career scorer, only averaged 7.3 PTS during his final season in 2018-2019. It was a graceful farewell tour for the legend, starting in only 20 of the 51 games that he played.
What is a 10-day contract?
As of January 5, 2022, NBA teams can offer standard 10-day contracts, which allows them to add a player to their roster for either 10 days or three games (whichever occurs later) without any commitment beyond that. Prior to the January 5 date, teams were able to offer 10-day contracts via the hardship exception.
The hardship exception takes place when a team has a player in health and safety protocols, or four players affected by longer-term injuries.
