The January Transfer Window is an important time in the Premier League. Bringing in a key signing could be the difference between a Champions League and Europa League, going down or staying up, and bringing excitement to the team or a loss of interest. Teams are relatively more conservative in January, but a few teams aren’t afraid to go get a signing. Many of the top six stayed put this window leaving the door for other clubs to steal the spotlight. Here are five January transfers that can make an impact for their club.
Honorable Mention
Emiliano Sala
Heartbreaking to think that Sala would never be able to show his trade in the Premier League. The club record signing for Cardiff City was having his best season in France, scoring 12 goals in 19 appearances. Sala would’ve given the Blue Birds the opportunity to stay up with the rest of Neil Warnock’s men. However, Sala’s plane is believed to have crashed in the English Channel while traveling to meet his new teammates.
5. Dominic Solanke
Solanke is a hot prospect that’s been at two of the biggest clubs in England. Starting at Chelsea, Solanke rarely saw time until he moved to Liverpool. Liverpool was more of the same, as he struggled to find minutes. His talent is undisputed and at 21 years old, he has time to develop. This could also be a buy for the future as top six clubs are circling for top striker Callum Wilson.
4. Nathaniel Clyne
Eddie Howe was able to get an experienced right back on loan to last the rest of season. Until last season, Nathaniel Clyne was the number one choice at full back for Liverpool. However, he’s lost his spot with the rise of Trent Alexander-Arnold. Clyne can move into the back four of Bournemouth as the mid-table club excite and look to finish in top half of table and maybe even push for Europa league positions.
3. Ryan Babel
Although it’s only for six
2. Miguel Almirón
Almirón may be coming from a lesser league in the MLS, but he was arguably one of the league’s best players during his two-year stint with Atlanta United. In his two seasons, the Paraguayan attacking midfielder scored 21 goals while also assisting on 21 goals in just 62 games. Rafa Benítez is in another relegation battle and a bolstered attack could keep Newcastle in the Premier League next season. Almirón is also at the young age of 24, so his £21 million
1. Youri Tielemans
The Belgian international leaves a poor Monaco side and comes into a Leicester City team looking to be the best outside the top six. Tielemans, 21 years old, brings lots of experience from his time in the Champions League, Ligue 1, and his time with the Belgian squad at the World Cup. He’s strong on both sides providing an attacking threat linking up play or sitting as a deep-lined playmaker. Leicester currently sit in 11th, and Claude Puel wants his team at least to try for the Europa League. Tielemans will help them over the line in May until his loan deal ends.
