Deshaun Watson’s Absence Has Changed The Texans

Deshaun Watson ACL

About two weeks ago, Deshaun Watson and the Texans learned that he had torn his ACL in practice. This injury ended the star rookie’s stellar season. His dynamic play-making brought a vibe to the Texans’ offense that hadn’t been seen in years. Since his first full game as a starter, Deshaun had been putting up unbelievable numbers, and the Texans’ offense was rolling. Now that he’s out for the season, the Texans are really struggling with Tom Savage at QB. Deshaun Watson’s absence has hurt the Texans’ offense, and it’s quite obvious.

With Watson at the helm, the Texans’ offense looked nearly unstoppable. Watson was in the thick of the Rookie of the Year race alongside Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt. Houston’s offense averaged 395 yards and 34.7 points per game with Watson as their QB. The rookie stepped up in big moments and gave his team a chance to win, although they couldn’t always capitalize due to some iffy play calling. Without Watson, Houston went from being one of the NFL’s rising teams, to the bottom of the league.

Under Tom Savage, the Texans have averaged only 258 yards and 9.3 points per game. Those stats took me by surprise. The yards per game dropped by over 100 yards, and the scoring dropped nearly 26 points. It’s kind of crazy to think that Tom Savage’s agent was complaining about how Savage earned his role as the starter. The guy can’t even score more than 10 points in a game. Two weeks ago, he had his first career touchdown pass. To say the least, the Texans are going to be terrible with Savage. Watson’s injury has truly devastated this team.

WHAT DO THE TEXANS DO?

Honestly, I don’t know. Maybe they start by trying out a new QB. Isn’t Bill O’Brien supposed to be some quarterback whisperer? If you look at his teams, that position has always been the question mark. The Texans have the receivers, a solid running back, and a solid defense (when healthy), but right now, they don’t have the QB.

The downfall this team has had isn’t shocking to me. Once I heard Watson had a torn ACL, I knew the Texans would begin to fall. So, maybe Watson’s college coach Dabo Swinney was right about Watson being the Michael Jordan of last year’s draft. I have a different player in mind. Deshaun Watson is the LeBron James of the draft. Whenever LeBron leaves a team, they suck. Sure, Deshaun is only a rookie, but have you seen the Texans with and without him? Watson’s absence has turned the Texans into a bottom tier NFL team.
