Colby Covington has become the villain of the UFC with his shit-talking and behavior towards all the other UFC fighters. He’s also one of its brightest rising stars. Whether you’re in the welterweight division or not, Colby’s going to come after you and call you a nerd and a virgin. He’s going home to his three women and decide which one he wants today. A lot of fighters talk shit, and most of the time, it’s received well by fans. It seemed no one was behind Colby or the shit he was talking to people. It seemed forced and scripted like he was trying to play a role to get his name bigger, which no one respected. He then took it to a new level in his fight against RDA last night in Chicago.
Not only did Covington come after RDA, he went after Brazil. He called all of Brazil nerds, called the country a dump, and said they’re all filthy animals. He’s called his run through the welterweight division this year on the way to the belt “#nerdbash2018.” His wrestling and cardio have proven to be his paths to victory, as he breaks people through the course of a fight. I can’t remember a more one-sided fight as far as support goes. No one was rooting for Colby. RDA is a former champion and a respected martial artist. Fans, myself included, thought he would use this motivation to secure a victory over the loud mouth. Only, that did not happen, not even close.
Colby came running out of the opening bell straight at RDA and pressured him against the cage getting a takedown in the first 10 seconds. That set the tone. Colby didn’t give RDA a second to breathe the entire fight. He smothered him. He was content with just pressing RDA against the cage if he couldn’t get the takedown. This wilted RDA’s will to win. Rafael Dos Anjos loves to have space to strike and throw his heavy leg kicks, and Colby completely shut that down by being chest to chest the entire fight. He was the bigger, stronger fighter with the better wrestling skills, and he used all of that to his advantage. He ran away with the decision victory and became the interim welterweight champion.
His other slogan has been “Make The Welterweight Division Great Again.” He’s playing the heel role well, after parodying Donald Trump. Now, he’s almost said what he’s going to do by winning the belt. However, he’s the interim champion and not the true champion Tyron Woodley. Don’t tell Colby that though. Colby was adamant in saying that his belt is the real belt, Woodley’s been hiding and doesn’t deserve the belt anymore.
After winning the belt he said he “is making the welterweight division great again,” and he’s going to bring that belt to the White House and meet Donald Trump as if he won the Super Bowl or something. Everyone’s taking it as a joke, but Dana White said: “I could make that happen.”
Say what you want about Colby Covington. He’s an ass, racist, and narcissistic. It may all be true. However, he’s also a young, good-looking, outspoken, conditioned champion. He’s without a doubt one of the best young stars in the UFC today. The more Dana wants to push him the bigger he’ll get. He’s not shying away from any person or camera. I guarantee that. Love him or hate him, he’s starting to make a fan out of me.
